At the end of April, I offered a "deep discount" on my makeup services for headshots. Definition of deep discount:
gratis, free, complimentary, no $$$! In exchange I would like high resolution images of the photo shoot for my portfolio, preferably on disc, or a site from which they can be effectively downloaded. More than just a makeup application: Consultation - We meet to discuss your expectations, previous headshots (bring to meeting), the "type" you want to convey, your current makeup collection (bring to meeting), and we determine the missing pieces of your collection to create the perfect look for auditions, every day and the photo shoot, of course. After our meeting, we proceed to the makeup department of a cosmetic store of your choice to find the best products for you, testing shades and discovering shadows at the various counters. Guys, you are no doubt thinking that this is more than you need, and I agree, but we can meet so I am certain to have the most appropriate concealer and powder for your skin tone. Photo shoot - I apply as we agree in our meeting. I start with a subtle makeup application, progress to full glamour, and stay with you through the shoot (if the photographer is amenable), to insure that you are matte or shiny where appropriate. I am also good at catching fly-away hair, spinach in your teeth, crumpled collars and unattractive wrinkles in your clothes, if you need a stylists eye. I usually ask $25 per hour, so the savings is significant ($200 +/-), especially if you choose to meet and consult at length and invite me to stay in studio through the shoot for touch ups and makeup changes. Please tell your friends!

I am always surprised at how many actors are awkward with their makeup. My solution: a consultation and makeup application. First we meet for a refreshing beverage or at their home and review their current headshot, their type and what makeup they have been using. I tell them what works and what doesn't. Then we shop (not always the same day). We rendezvous at Bloomingdale's, Sephora, Fresh, MAC, or wherever is convenient and it is amazing how accommodating the employees are. They know they are getting a sale out of it, while I do most of the work!
When I worked with Nicole (see Makeup Artist tab), we met at one of Bloomingdale's restaurants, discussed her headshot, the type she wanted to convey, looked through her makeup that I asked her to bring with her, then proceeded to the makeup department. I applied full makeup at Trish McEvoy, testing shades and discovering shadows. She made the necessary purchase and the next time we met was at Chia Messina's studio for her headshot shoot. She has a great room for prep with excellent lighting! I applied subtle makeup for phase one, added a little more and warmer for phase two, and phase three was full glamour. All in all I spent 3 hours with her at Bloomingdale's and 6 hours with her at Chia Messina. Not all headshot shoots are as time intensive, so I break down by the hour. I ask $25 per hour, but for YOU, I am offering a deep discount - reference "Scavengerjo" in your request. In exchange I request prompt delivery of high resolution images from the photographer (preferably on disc, or a site from which they can be effectively downloaded). |
