Styling. Staging. Decorating. Designing. Bedazzling!
When I was young, my family moved to a new house in Richmond, Virginia. My father allowed my sister and me to choose the color of the paint for our bedrooms. I chose the brightest yellow available in the 70s, known thereafter as “Jody Yellow,” however, that was not striking enough for me. I recall paging through my father's TIME magazines, cutting out provocative words and images and taping them to my walls in a very balanced and expansive collage. My mother never complained about the tape and the potential damage to the beautiful yellow paint.
Decades later, my husband and I bought a co-op in Queens, New York, and I essentially reproduced my childhood vision in my studio, featuring "Highlighter Yellow," which illuminates our entire apartment as the sun cozies into the afternoon sky. The balanced, expansive collage could not be contained and has taken over the entire apartment. Instead of tape, it's nails. Instead of magazine clippings, it's flea market finds, vintage prints and bona fide art.
As a photo stylist, I am able to indulge my fascination with color, texture and balance. Having impressed friends with my inspired and somewhat unorthodox interior embellishments, I found the courage to boast to an interior designer, who challenged my bravado and hired me to style for a photo shoot featured in her on-line portfolio. A career is launched!
